A Girls' Day Out in Arizona Wine Country

There’s something magical about rounding up your girlfriends, piling into a party bus, and heading out into the Arizona high desert for a full day of wine tasting, laughter, and memory-making. That’s exactly what we did—with a small crew of six and a bottle-popping itinerary headed straight for the Verde Valley wine region.

We booked our ride with Scottsdale Party Bus & Limo, our go-to service for group outings. Clifton, our driver for the day, was a total gem—punctual, patient, and an expert at navigating both winding roads and group vibes. He kept our music going, made sure we were fully stocked with waters, ice, cups, and good energy, and gave us the peace of mind to simply enjoy the ride.

First Stop:

Cove Mesa Vineyard

Award-winning wines served with heart and hometown hospitality

Photo via Jenna Karwoski Portrait

We kicked off our wine adventure at Cove Mesa Vineyard in Cornville—and it set the bar high. Tucked just off the main road, the winery has a laid-back western charm, with guests relaxing on the front patio with their pups and glasses of wine in hand. Step inside, and you’re greeted with warm smiles and an inviting atmosphere, where the team makes you feel right at home and the wines start flowing.

What makes Cove Mesa truly special is the passion behind every bottle. Owners Emil and Cindy Molin decided to build their dream at a time when many people are thinking about winding down. Inspired by a shared love of exceptional wine, they opened Cove Mesa with a vision—and it’s now an award-winning destination in Arizona wine country. Their team, made up of professionals from diverse backgrounds, shares a dedication to quality, hospitality, and creating a memorable experience for every visitor.

We had the chance to sit down for a guided tasting, sampling standouts like their Viognier, Petite Sirah, and a gorgeous Grenache Rosé. The wines are elegant, complex, and clearly made with care. The gourmet food menu added to the experience with delicious charcuterie boards, flatbread pizza, and a crispy gluten-free pizza that was honestly one of the best we’ve had. We wrapped things up with chocolate truffles—because what’s wine tasting without a little dessert?

Our friend Elizabeth Lowney, who handles PR for Cove Mesa through her firm Creating Buzz PR, had a special moment of her own—personally delivering the winery’s 31 medals from the 2025 Annual San Francisco Wine Competition, which we got to pose with (yes, the medals are as heavy as they look!).

And the accolades don’t stop there—Cove Mesa is one of just four wineries featured in the upcoming documentary Vintage Arizona, a film highlighting the rise of Arizona’s wine world, now streaming on Amazon Prime. They were also one of the select wineries invited to pour at the Annual Art d’Core Gala on March 1, where the Arizona Wine Growers Association announces the year’s top winemakers. It’s the kind of event where you can sip shoulder-to-shoulder with the best in the business.

Between the wines, the team, and the story behind it all, Cove Mesa was the perfect place to begin our day—and a reminder that the best wine experiences are built on passion, purpose, and a whole lot of heart.

Second Stop:

Page Springs Cellars

Laid-back beauty, a guided tasting, and a wine with a powerful purpose

After soaking up the good wine and warm hospitality at Cove Mesa, we were off to our next destination—Page Springs Cellars—thanks to more than just a recommendation from Emil and Cindy. They actually went a step further and set up a guided tour for us, making sure we were warmly welcomed when we arrived. It turns out the Verde Valley wine community is not only tight-knit but genuinely supportive of one another.

As we pulled into Page Springs, we checked in for our Estate Winery Tour, then grabbed a glass from their walk-up bar to sip while we explored the beautiful grounds. The tasting room opens up to a back deck overlooking the vineyard and Oak Creek, with live music setting a peaceful, laid-back mood.

The guided tour took us into parts of the winery not open to the general public—through the estate vineyard, cellar, barrel room, and crush pad—with tastings along the way. It started with a bright, slightly funky Colibri Syrah Nouveau (which almost had beer-like characteristics), and progressed through a mix of reds and whites. A standout moment? Sampling a deep, earthy Syrah pulled straight from the barrel.

One of the most memorable stories we heard during the tour was about their Vin de Filles project—a 100% female-produced wine created by a fellowship of women who voluntarily care for specific rows of vines at the House Mountain and Dos Padres vineyards. These women work through the full growing cycle, from tending the vines to harvesting, fermenting, and bottling the final wine. The result is a beautifully expressive co-ferment of Syrah and Malvasia, with notes of jammy red fruit and crushed violets. Even more meaningful? The majority of net profits are donated to the Verde Valley Sanctuary, a nonprofit supporting women affected by domestic abuse, assault, and trafficking. With only 77 cases produced, it’s a rare and powerful bottle—and a moving reminder of how much passion and purpose can be poured into a single vintage.

Page Springs Cellars also has a full food menu, plus picnic options if you want to extend your stay. For groups, the Vineyard Deck (up to 24 guests) and Crow’s Nest (up to 10) offer private spaces for tastings and events with a view.

This stop was rich in flavor, scenery, and soul—and one we won’t forget anytime soon.

Third Stop:

Merkin Vineyards Hilltop Winery & Trattoria

Bold wines, farm-to-table fare, and a hilltop experience worth the ride

To end our tour, we made our way to Merkin Vineyards Hilltop Winery & Trattoria, and it couldn’t have been a more memorable finale. While you can walk up, we highly recommend taking the Hilltop Tram—we paid for our tokens by purchasing house-made gelato (a sweet little system), then saved the gelato to enjoy after our ride back down. The scenic ride up to the winery was part of the charm, offering a peaceful transition into our final tasting of the day.

At the top, you’re met with 270-degree views of the Verde Valley, and a warm, welcoming restaurant that feels both elevated and cozy. Merkin is the brainchild of Maynard James Keenan, the lead singer of Tool and A Perfect Circle—who also happens to be one of Arizona’s most passionate (and accomplished) winemakers. His commitment to local, sustainable agriculture and old-world winemaking methods is reflected in every detail of the experience.

We tasted several wines, but the unanimous favorite was the Shinola—a smooth, balanced Italian-style red that hit all the right notes. We also sampled Chupacabra, a bold red blend, and Tarzan, a bright and refreshing white—each one delicious and totally unique.

Their farm-to-table menu features produce grown right in their greenhouse, and everything we tried was next-level. Highlights included Grilled Lamb Lollipops, fresh seasonal salads, Prickly Pear Pasta Mac & Cheese, and the standout CRUCIFIXEN pizza topped with house-made pesto and fresh arugula.

It was the perfect final stop—great food, stunning views, and wines we’ll definitely be bringing home.

Photo via Jenna Karwoski Portrait

Just a two-hour drive from Scottsdale, the Verde Valley is one of Arizona’s best-kept secrets—an unexpected blend of scenic beauty, warm hospitality, and seriously impressive wines. While we only made it to three wineries on this trip, each one offered something unique and memorable—from Cove Mesa’s award-winning old-world wines and heartfelt story, to Page Springs’ creekside charm and vineyard tour, to Merkin’s hilltop views and farm-fresh flavors.

There are dozens more wineries across Cottonwood, Cornville, Jerome, and beyond, and we’re already planning our next getaway to keep the tasting going. Whether you’re pulling together a girls’ weekend, celebrating something special, or just need a change of scenery, a wine-fueled escape to Arizona’s high desert is always a good idea.

Planning Tips for Your Wine Tour

Photo via Jenna Karwoski Portrait
  • Make Reservations in Advance – Many Verde Valley wineries recommend (or require) tasting reservations, especially for groups. Tours and private group spaces book up quickly on weekends and during peak seasons (spring and fall).

  • Best Time to Go – March through May and September through November are ideal for perfect patio weather, vineyard views, and seasonal events. But even in summer, many wineries offer misters, shaded patios, and indoor spaces to keep you cool.

  • Group Size Matters – If you’re traveling with a group, call ahead to see what accommodations are available. Some wineries have special decks or tasting rooms just for groups, and others have limits (often 6–10 people per group).

  • Bring Snacks & Water for the Ride – If you’re booking a party bus, it’s smart to bring plenty of water, snacks, and maybe a playlist to keep the vibes going between stops.

  • Don’t Skip the Merch – Many wineries sell small-batch bottles you can’t find anywhere else—plus fun gear and gifts if you’re celebrating something special.
