Guarding the Art: A Frontline Perspective

January 19 - December 12

“Guarding the Art: A Frontline Perspective” will showcase a unique selection of works from the Phoenix Art Museum Collection, curated by guest curators drawn from the Museum’s frontline teams, including security, visitor services, facilities, event-rentals, and retail-services. These individuals, actively involved in engaging with artworks and visitors in the galleries, offer unprecedented insights into the exhibition. The concept for this groundbreaking exhibition was conceived by Amy Elias, a longstanding Trustee of the Baltimore Museum of Art.

The Guarding the Art curators will leverage their distinctive perspectives on art and guest experiences to create an exhibition, didactic and interpretation materials, object labels, and a publication. This collaborative effort involves coordination with various Museum departments, including marketing and communications, preparation and registration, education and engagement, among others. Additionally, the curatorial team will collaborate with a distinguished art historian and scholar who will provide mentorship and professional development support.

Following the model established by the Baltimore Museum of Art in 2022, PhxArt will present its own iteration of the exhibition in 2024. This pioneering project challenges traditional museum hierarchies and initiates a dialogue about who has the authority to discuss and interpret art, marking a significant milestone as the first of its kind at the Phoenix Art Museum.
