How to Introduce Your Kids to Golf
The Golf Whisperer
Tips from Tiger’s Early Days
By: Roger Hackett
Attention beginning golfers!
Parents often ask me how to introduce their children to the game of golf.
Let me tell you how the best player in the world started…
Earl Woods, Tiger’s father, started his very young son on the greens. Tiger was able to get a feel for the club and ball, finding joy in seeing his putts and chips go in the hole more and more. His dad kept him there for over a year.
When Tiger was ready, his dad began teaching him the swing. Once Tiger was able to hit the ball near the green in two, his short game took over. The art of golf is learning how to score even when you don’t have your A-game.
Pros hit around 14 greens per round and still shoot five under par—all because of their short game. You cannot underestimate the importance of having a good feel for your wedges and your putter.
Next time you’re out practicing, make sure to give equal time to chipping and putting as you do to hitting the golf ball. It will pay off, and your partners will have to start buying you lunch in the clubhouse.
The Golf Whisperer wishes you all a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year!
